For a young doctor and his wife searching the country for a place to call home, Little Rock was his first choice. In 1965, Dr. Carl J. Raque received his medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. For the next three years, he served as an Army General Medical Officer at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and then in Vietnam. With service to his country behind him, Dr. Raque completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. During his second year, he received a National Institute of Health fellowship, and spent the next two years studying and working on research under respected dermatologist and author, Walter B. Shelley, M.D. When it was time to move on, Dr. Raque remembers that he sent out letters to every Arkansas dermatologist he could find listed with the American Academy of Dermatology inquiring about possible positions. The young couple had their hearts set on the capitol city. "Little Rock is a charming city with many of the advantages of a large city while retaining its hometown atmosphere," Raque says. After a visit, they decided, "it would be a great place to raise a family." In 1971, Dr. Raque happily joined the Little Rock Dermatology Clinic, and accepted a voluntary faculty appointment at the University of Medical Sciences at Little Rock in the Department of Dermatology. He and his wife, Ann, and their two young daughters moved to the city, and Dr. Raque, who was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, says, "It's a decision I've never regretted." Nine years later Dr. Raque started his own practice, the Arkansas Dermatology Clinic, P.A., located in the Doctors Building on University Avenue, where for 24 years he has continued his dedication to provide the highest level of dermatological care for his patients by using up-to-date technology in conjunction with the most advanced procedures. His services cover the complete range of dermatological care including skin examinations, treatment of skin diseases, skin cancers, skin surgery, radiation therapy, and ultraviolet light therapy for psoriasis. He is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Preferred Provider and a Medicare participating physician. Dr. Raque is associated with St. Vincent's Doctors Hospital, St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and Baptist Medical Center. He has published numerous papers on his specialty in trade journals, contributed his expertise to textbooks, and made presentations throughout the South. In addition, he serves as a member in several medical and scientific organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Pulaski County Medical Society, the Arkansas Dermatological Society (1971 President), and the American Society of Dermatopathology. He is a member of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce. In the past, he served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the UAMS, and an active participant in the McClellan Cooperative Office Education program. "One of the most satisfying aspects of my work is meeting wonderful people from every area of the state," Dr. Raque says. By allowing time for personal communication in a down-to-earth manner, his patients are able to develop a rapport that is centered on trust and communication, which leads to successful therapy. Of utmost importance to Dr. Raque are his patients, employees, family, many friends and his faith. This year Dr. Raque celebrates 33 years of practice in Arkansas and 41 years of marriage, as well as the birth of his second grandchild. Dr. Raque is a professional, an expert in this field, with a compassion and a respect for the people he treats - definitely, a winning combination for the patient!
